LOCHNAGAR CRATER

This crater was 300 feet across and 90 feet deep. It was caused
by a British explosion at 7:28am on 1 July 1916, launching the
Battle of the Somme at 7:30am.

The charge was 60,000lbs of Ammonal. The craters name comes
from the trench where the main tunnel to lay the explosivies
(mine) started. The crater has reduced in size over the years.
